Empowering Minds

An initiative of the You Make THE Difference Foundation

FIRST IDENTIFIER TRAINING

Notice change. Listen well. Respond within your role. Help someone connect.

A First Identifier is an everyday person equipped to recognize when someone may be struggling and help them take an appropriate next step.

Empowering Minds is not therapy, counselling, diagnosis, or a service for crisis response.

Participants gather for a group photograph with Empowering Minds in Kent County, Michigan.

AN EARLY SUPPORT ROLE

People do not need to be professionals to notice, listen, and care.

First Identifier training gives ordinary people practical language and boundaries for responding when a friend, colleague, student, volunteer, neighbour, or family member may be struggling.

The role is supportive and relational. It is not clinical.

What to Look For

Changes in behaviour, appearance, routines, energy, performance, or connection that suggest someone may be struggling.

What to Listen For

Words, tone, repeated concerns, withdrawal, hopelessness, or comments that signal strain and the need for support.

What to Say

Simple, respectful conversation starters that show care, reduce pressure, and invite the person to talk without judgment.

What to Do

Listen, respond within your role, encourage an appropriate next step, and connect the person with suitable support.

The conversation is not about having every answer.

It is about creating enough safety for someone to speak, listening without rushing to fix the situation, and helping the person identify an appropriate source of support.

A First Identifier does

  • Notice meaningful changes
  • Start a respectful conversation
  • Listen without judgment
  • Respond within appropriate boundaries
  • Encourage and connect someone with support
  • Act when immediate safety is at risk

A First Identifier does not

  • Diagnose a mental health condition
  • Provide therapy or counselling
  • Promise confidentiality when safety is at risk
  • Take responsibility for solving another person’s life
  • Replace trained professionals or emergency services
