Empowering Minds

An initiative of the You Make THE Difference Foundation

ABOUT EMPOWERING MINDS

Stronger communities begin before a crisis.

Empowering Minds is an upstream community wellbeing initiative that helps rural and small communities notice struggle earlier, respond with greater confidence, and strengthen the relationships that help people feel known, needed, and connected.

Empowering Minds is education and community activation, not therapy, counselling, diagnosis, or a service for crisis response.

Participants gather for a group photograph with Empowering Minds in Rycroft, Alberta.

WHY THIS WORK EXISTS

Too many people struggle in silence until a challenge becomes a crisis.

Rural communities are rich in connection, resourcefulness, and care. They can also face distance, limited access to services, stigma, and uncertainty about what to say when someone is struggling. Empowering Minds builds on local strengths by equipping everyday people to recognize concern, listen well, respond appropriately, and help someone take a next step toward support.

01

Where it began

Empowering Minds began with a practical question: what could change if a community was equipped before a crisis? The initiative grew from the belief that meaningful prevention starts upstream, through trusted relationships, shared language, and people who are ready to act with care.

02

What guides us

Known. Needed. Connected. People are more able to contribute, recover, and thrive when they feel seen and valued, know they make a difference, and experience genuine belonging. This belief shapes every conversation, resource, and community activation.

03

What makes the model different

Empowering Minds is built with communities, not simply delivered to them. Local leaders help shape the work, trusted organizations invite participation, First Identifier training gives people practical tools, and follow up helps turn learning into repeated action. The goal is local capacity, not long term dependency.

04

The people who carry it forward

The initiative is led by the You Make THE Difference Foundation and activated alongside local hosts, schools, workplaces, agriculture, first responders, faith communities, service organizations, and residents. Community leadership is not an accessory to the model; it is how the work becomes trusted, relevant, and sustainable.

05

A growing circle of prepared people

More than 3,000 First Identifiers have been trained in Alberta, with additional communities building their own capacity through Empowering Minds. Every trained person expands the circle of people who can notice, listen, respond, and connect someone with suitable support.

Foundation leadership

Ian Hill
Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Ian’s work is grounded in the conviction that the people closest to a challenge are best situated to help solve it. Empowering Minds translates that conviction into practical community action.

Local community leadership

Local hosts and organizing teams

Community partners bring local knowledge, trusted relationships, and continued ownership. They help ensure the initiative reflects the people, priorities, and strengths of each place.

One initiative. One larger mission.

Empowering Minds is one of six initiatives of the You Make THE Difference Foundation, a nonprofit community benefit organization serving rural communities in the United States and Canada. Together, the initiatives help people and communities build the capacity to shape stronger futures.
